Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde, PHD, RN, FAAN is a nationally and internationally recognized nurse scholar, educator, and author. She is the 2016–17 president of the American Nurses Association (ANA) College of Nursing and a professor at Quinnipiac University School of Nursing in Hamden, Connecticut.
Murillo-Rohde has authored or co-authored more than 60 scholarly articles and chapters on nursing research and practice. Her work has been featured in The New England Journal of Medicine, Academic Medicine, Journal of Advanced Nursing, Nurse Practitioner Today and other journals.
Murillo-Rohde’s professional appointments include chairperson for the National Quality Forum’s National Implementation Expert Group on Improving Patient Safety; member of the United States Presidents Advisory Commission for Complementary and Alternative Medicine; member of the Editorial Board for JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association; editorial board member for Advance Practice Nursing Journal; and associate editor for Nursing & Health Sciences Education. She was bestowed with an honorary doctorate from Universidad de Buenos Aires in Argentina in 2018.

Ildaura Murillo-Rohde, PhD, RN, FAAN is a nationally-renowned registered nurse and professor of nursing at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She has authored or co-authored over 150 scientific papers and book chapters in the field of nursing research. Murillo-Rohde is also an expert on geriatric care, HIV/AIDS care, and pain management. She has received numerous awards and accolades for her work in nursing research, including the prestigious Wilbur L. Cross Award from the American Nurses Association for excellence in nursing research.

Doctor Ildaura Murillo-Rohde, PhD., RN, FAAN is an internationally renowned scholar and clinician with over 25 years of experience in the nursing field. She has expertise in critical care nursing and pulmonary rehabilitation, and her research focuses on improving patient outcomes in these areas. In addition to her academic work, Dr. Murillo-Rohde also serves as a nurse advisor for the Department of Veterans Affairs’ national veterans’ program. Early Life of Murillo-Rohde
Ildaura Murillo-Rohde, PhD, RN, FAAN is a Cuban-American nurse and author. She was born in Havana, Cuba on March 7th, 1957. Murillo-Rohde’s early life was marked by political turmoil and instability. Her parents were both dissidents who were persecuted by the Cuban government. Following the Cuban Revolution of 1959, her family fled to Miami, Florida where they lived in exile for several years.
Murillo-Rohde attended college in the United States and earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Nova Southeastern University in 1982. She then obtained a doctorate in nursing from the University of South Carolina in 1988. During her undergraduate studies at Nova Southeastern University, Murillo-Rohde was active in the civil rights movement and participated in sit-ins and protests against racism on campus.
After earning her doctorate, Murillo-Rohde joined the faculty of Vanderbilt University School of Nursing as an assistant professor. In 1997 she became an associate professor there and remained on staff until 2003 when she moved to Boston University School of Nursing where she served as full professor until her retirement in 2016.
Murillo-Rohde has spent much of her career researching health disparities affecting minority populations. For example, she has studied racial differences in cancer incidence and mortality rates among black Americans and Hispanic Americans. Murillo-Rohde has made significant contributions to the field of nursing and health care. She is a Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Chief of the Division of Intensive Care Nursing at Parkland Memorial Hospital. Murillo-Rohde has authored or coauthored over 180 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and books on nursing and health care topics. Her work has helped improve the quality of care for patients in intensive care units (ICUs).
Murillo-Rohde’s research focuses on developing methods to optimize patient outcomes in ICUs.
