To get an apostille for marriage or birth certificate, you can follow these steps:

  • Contact the county or state agency that issued the document. Ask for information on apostille procedures and requirements.
  • Gather any required forms, fees, and supporting documents.
  • Submit the document and any required forms, fees, and supporting documents to the county or state agency.
  • Wait for the county or state agency to process your request and issue the apostille.
  • Once you receive the apostille, check that it is correct and complete.

It is also important to note that you should verify that the country where the document will be used recognizes apostilles and that the document meets their specific requirements.

Understand the Definition of An Apostille

An apostille is a certificate that authenticates the origin of a document. It confirms that the document in question was created, signed and issued from a public institution like a court or government agency. In some countries, documents must have an apostille attached to them in order for them to be accepted as valid in another country. Therefore, if you need to present your marriage or birth certificate outside of your own country you may need to get an apostille attached to it first.

Ensure Your Document Is Qualified For An Apostille

Before you start the apostille process, you should make sure that your document is qualified for an apostille. Generally speaking, an apostille certificate is only suitable for government-issued documents such as birth certificates and marriage certificates. Documents issued by private organizations, like a school or doctor’s office need to be notarized instead. Additionally, if your document has been translated into another language, the translated version may require an apostille or notary signature from both countries.

Gather Required Documentation

Before beginning the apostille process, make sure you have all of the necessary documents. This includes a certified copy of the marriage or birth certificate, an application form and payment (if needed). Depending on your state or country, you may need additional documentation that needs to be notarized. Make sure to read all instructions carefully, as State requirements can vary between locations.

Make Copies and Submit Your Documents to Your Local State Secretary Office

Next, you will need to submit two copies of the documents, along with the application and payment if required. Make sure to include self-addressed stamped envelope so that your documents can be returned to you. Once all of the documentation is received, your state’s Secretary Office will review it for authentication before issuing the apostille for marriage and birth certificates seal.

Submit the Application To The US Department Of State for Authentication

After receiving the apostille seal, you will need to submit it to the US Department of State for authentication. This is an extra step for documents that will be sent abroad. As some countries require a further authentication from the Department of State before recognizing the apostille from your state. You will be required to provide two copies of your document with the apostille seal. And include a little fee for each document when submitting them to the US Department Of State.
